SUMMARY:Flight Stimulator - ATC and Pilots Take a Flight in the Same Room
DESCRIPTION:Pilots and air traffic controllers have a unique relationship. Both sit behind displays with a lot of information\, but one is on the ground and the other likely hundreds of miles away and thousands of feet above creating quite a different perspective. \nLet’s get a couple of ATC tower and C90 TRACON controllers in the same room with a couple pilots and simulate a flight. Of course\, our pilots and controllers are going to make things “interesting” and we’ll see the other scramble to figure out WTF! \nWe welcome Ryan Schile and Andrew Rice\, Certified Professional Controllers (CPC) from O’Hare towers. Last year\, on March 1st\, the two of them saved a few hundred people from a very bad day\, separating an ERJ-145 from a B737-8 who got within 0.23 nm from each other. This won them the coveted President’s Award\, aka Archie Award\, at the Archie League Medal of Safety Awards banquet. We celebrate their getting it right\, and in the words of NATCA president\, Paul Rinaldi\, not getting it wrong. \nAnd\, we welcome Ryan Jaros\, a C90 TRACON controller\, to be our man in the middle. \nAnd\, like Rod Machado has shown us for many years now\, a bit of comedy can make a useful way to teach some valuable lessons. \nSo\, while these are decorated\, expert controllers\, our scenario will truly put them to the test of their skills. We’re going to conduct a flight between a couple local airports with a TRACON handoff in the middle. How many possible errors can some pilots and controllers make in one short flight like this? You’ll have to attend to find out. And\, no FAA Enforcement members will be present so we’ll see what virtual pilot or controller deviations happen! \nWarning: anybody using the term “fish finder” will result in vectors to hold over the North Pole with further clearance next week. \nNo\, the headline isn’t a typo\, this flight should be stimulating! \n \n  \nWelcome to the new COVID-19 world. Things have changed since the beginning of the year and we are adapting\, too. \nWe will offer a video conference stream for those who would rather. Details and registration will be provided shortly. \nFor those attending in person\, COVID protocols will be in place. Chairs will be properly distanced (socially-distancing groups\, e.g. couples\, partners\, etc.\, can move chairs together) and masks are required. We will cap the number of people at 50. Your cooperating is required if you wish to attend in person. Prior to attending a safety seminar please review and abide by current CDC\, state and\, local health guidelines.

SUMMARY:CEPA IMC Club August 2020 - Boston Bait and Switch with ORD tower and C90 Controllers
DESCRIPTION:We welcome Ryan Schile and Andrew Rice\, Certified Professional Controllers (CPC) from O’Hare towers. \nTonight\, we discuss another Class Bravo busy airport where a Mooney is landing on a compassion flight. Mixing in with the turbine traffic isn’t easy for pilots or controllers. Let’s figure out this pilot’s difficult approach and decision. With our two tower controllers and a TRACON (and former MIA tower) controller\, this should be a fascinating discussion! \nIMC Club: The IMC Club’s purpose is to promote instrument flying\, proficiency\, and safety. The intent is to create a community of pilots willing to share their perspective\, provide recognition\, foster communications\, promote safety\, and build proficiency in instrument flying. An IFR rating is not needed to participate in this excellent forum where we think through the various options from the comfort of your chair\, firmly on the ground… before it is you sitting in the cockpit. \nWe meet monthly when pilots (and would-be pilots) network and share knowledge and experiences to keep our heads in the game. \n \nWelcome to the new COVID-19 world. SUMMARY:CEPA & Waukegan IMC Club Joint Chapter Meeting - July 2020
DESCRIPTION:  \nA mid-summer trip between Chicago and Kansas City\, what could go wrong? The weather at the destination was the main consideration when the go/no go decision was made. Things became very interesting very fast when lower clouds were experienced before getting out of Chicago. Having the XM weather in-op was to be a minor inconvenience but wasn’t so minor when the onboard iPad with ADS‑B weather overheated and shut down. \nTime permitting\, we’ll look at a second scenario\, a quick breakfast flight to KBMI and back. There was a significant WX shift resulting in an uncomfortable encounter with ice on the return trip to KPWK. The pictures will make you shudder. \n \nSponsored by Chicago Executive Pilots Association (CEPA). \nIf you aren’t a member of CEPA\, please consider joining CEPA if you aren’t a member and like programs like this\, please visit us at www.PWKpilots.org/membership/  Your dues help pay for these safety seminars.

SUMMARY:CEPA IMC Club - Going Up or Down - January
DESCRIPTION:From the initial planning\, it was obviously not going to be a picturesque flight. There were weather systems around but they did seem manageable. Warren departs\, climbs to 8\,000 as he heads on course\, steps up to 11\,000 and then the fun begins\, first ice and then a whole colorful cocktail of weather in a very unusual pattern! Spoiler alert: a tornado is involved here. \nWhat would you do? \nSpeaker bio:  \nOur very own Warren Bruhl\, DC\, presents a flight he submitted to IMC Club. He is a practicing chiropractor\, wellness and health care professional. Warren started flying in 2015 and now holds a Commercial Single Engine Airplane certificate with an Instrument rating. He is hard at work getting his multi with his eye on an ATP. His plan is to transition to a full-time aviation career and is flying 300-plus hours per year! Warren is a board member and secretary of the Chicago Executive Pilots’ Association (CEPA). He also runs a not-for-profit charitable organization and does missionary work in Kenya\, teaching aviation topics to young\, eager students.

SUMMARY:Don't Get Upset\, Recover!
DESCRIPTION:IMC Club – Don’t Get Upset\, Recover!\n\n\n\nSeptember 25\, 2019 at 18:30 – 19:30\nDave Klopfleisch will lead a discussion on loss-of-control so we can keep the blue side up\, even when we can’t see the blue. We will look at loss-of-control in various phases of flight: \n\nInstrument takeoff\nClimb out\nEn route\nInitial and final approach\n\nSo\, we’ll figure out our best answer to the infamous IMC Club question\, “what would you do?” \nSpeaker bio: Dave Klopfleisch  \nDave started flying in 1966 at Roselle Airport\, now called Schaumburg Airport in Schaumburg\, IL. He served in the Navy from 1968-1974\, with his last duty station at Miramar\, CA. In the Navy\, Dave flew the TA-4\, single-engine attack jet. Afterward\, Dave worked for various corporate flight departments and served as the Safety Officer at the NAS Glenview Flying Club from 1993-1996. \nFlight Qualifications include: CFI and MEI\, ATP\, Part 121 Flight Dispatcher\, current Safety Officer at Chicago Executive Flight School \n  \n  \nIMC Club: The IMC Club’s purpose is to promote instrument flying\, proficiency\, and safety. \nWe meet monthly when pilots (and would-be pilots) network and share knowledge and experiences to keep our head in the game.

SUMMARY:Safety Meeting at PWK - Get your HEMS tool up - Rex Alexander
DESCRIPTION:HEMS stands for Helicopter Emergency Medical Services. But you don’t need to be flying a helicopter\, nor doing emergency medical services to make good use of it. \nWhat makes the HEMS tool such a valuable supplement to a weather briefing is that it fills a niche in the lineup of aviation weather information sources. The tool isn’t a surface observation report (like a METAR) or a terminal forecast but is a resource that helps you figure out what the weather may be in the low levels and at the surface between two reporting points. \nUsing the HEMS tool during your flight planning will make you a safer\, more weather-savvy pilot\, because the tool was designed to increase pilots’ situational awareness down low\, thus reducing loss-of-control accidents (LOC) and controlled flight into terrain (CFIT). \nSpeaker bio:\nRex Alexander is president of Five-Alpha (5α) LLC\, a global consultancy dedicated to providing specialized education\, training\, insight\, and services in the very challenging and unique communities of Helicopter and Vertical Lift Infrastructure and Organ/Tissue Donation & Transplantation. \n \nSponsored by Chicago Executive Pilots Association (CEPA). \nThis meeting is part of the bi-monthly Chicago Executive Pilots’ Association proficiency and safety seminar series\, this event is to promote safety and build proficiency flying. Students and airline captains alike are invited to participate in this excellent forum where we think through the various options from the comfort of your chair\, firmly on the ground… before it is you sitting in the cockpit. \nIf you aren’t a member of CEPA\, please consider joining CEPA if you aren’t a member and like programs like this\, please visit us at www.PWKpilots.org/membership/  Your dues help pay for these safety seminars. \nNOTE: There is an IMC Club meeting prior to this one. Each has a separate registration. Please join us for both but be sure to register for both separately. Also\, register here for the IMC Club meeting.

SUMMARY:Night Flying Safety - What Your CFI Didn't Teach You - Max Trescott
DESCRIPTION:Flying at night can be fun\, but pilots should know the pitfalls and plan accordingly. The risks at night are different and higher\, but they can be quantified and mitigated by cautious pilots who are well versed in night flying safety techniques. \nLearn ways to fly safely at night and avoid some of the pitfalls that continue to claim even experienced pilots in avoidable night flying accidents. \nJoin us for our semi-monthly safety seminar. The objective: fly safer by being a prepared pilot. \nSpeaker bio: Max Trescott is the 2008 National CFI of the Year. SUMMARY:IMC Club - Above the Clouds with a Dark PFD moderated by Max Trescott
DESCRIPTION:It is an early evening\, easy flight from Cleveland Lorraine County Regional (KLPR) to Nashville (KBNA). Not! This is an IMC Club meeting\, nothing happens without some kind of a problem and the opportunity for us to have a discussion about what circumstances our unfortunate pilot friend faces. What unfortunate problem? His PFD goes dark shortly after takeoff; ceilings are not good\, better weather ahead but how far? Yikes! So\, we’ll figure out our best answer to the infamous IMC Club question\, “what would you do?” \nSpeaker bio: Max Trescott is the 2008 National CFI of the Year.
