SUMMARY:CEPA Combined IMC Club and Safety Meeting - June 2021
DESCRIPTION:PWK IMC Club and CEPA Safety Meeting – NTSB Case Study – Ed Malinowski\nTopic: ‘My engine was well maintained but it had a power loss accident?’ – The evolution of a Critical Service Bulletin\n\nThis June we are changing up the format of our usual IMC Club and Safety meeting. Instead\, we are encouraging all pilots to attend right from the start as we are extremely fortunate to have Ed Malinowski\, a former NTSB accident investigator\, present the findings of an accident in which a well-maintained Cirrus suffered a loss of power\, resulting in the deployment of the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS) and saved the life of the pilot. Ed will walk us through how the NTSB conducts its investigations\, some ideas for us on operating the airplanes we own or rent. He will also be discussing Service Difficulty Reports (SDRs) and how the findings of this unfortunate accident led to a Critical Service Bulletin (CSB). In addition\, Ed will walk us through an FAA presentation on how to access the SDR database via the FAA’s website. \nThe flight in which the accident occurred was under IFR; however\, we believe the information in this presentation will be relevant to all pilots\, renters and owners alike.\n \nSpeaker bio: Since 1999\, Ed has investigated the facts\, circumstances\, and conditions associated with aviation accidents and has produced factual reports regarding them. He has 31+ years of US Air Force reserve service (Lt. Col. with Logistics Commander\, Squadron Commander\, Aircraft Maintenance\, and Readiness specialties) which includes Key Positions as an aircraft maintenance analyst for senior AF leadership in the Crisis Action Team in the Pentagon\, Deputy Commander of an Enroute Group\, Deputy Commander of the largest combat deployed maintenance Wing\, and Officer In Charge of the AF Division during the 56th Inaugural Parade. His experience as an airline transport pilot with air taxi/carrier operations along with experience as the airport manager of an airport certified under FAR 139 (Meigs Field) has also rounded out his background.  \n\nIMC Club: The IMC Club’s purpose is to promote instrument flying\, proficiency\, and safety. The intent is to create a community of pilots willing to share their perspective\, provide recognition\, foster communications\, promote safety\, and build proficiency in instrument flying. An IFR rating is not needed to participate in this excellent forum where we think through the various options from the comfort of your chair\, firmly on the ground… before it is you sitting in the cockpit. \nWe meet monthly when pilots (and would-be pilots) network and share knowledge and experiences to keep our heads in the game. \nFor FAASafety WINGS credits\, complete the online meeting attendance form; the meeting code will be provided at the end of each of the meetings. \nTo attend the online meeting\, go to https://join.freeconferencecall.com/pwkpilots\nOnline meeting ID: pwkpilots\nDial-in number (US): (720) 740-9630\nAccess code: 119900* \nSponsored by Chicago Executive Pilots Association (CEPA). \nIf you aren’t a member of CEPA and enjoy programs like this please consider joining CEPA; visit us at www.PWKpilots.org/membership/  Your dues help pay for these safety seminars.

DESCRIPTION:PWK IMC Club presents Ken Peters – IMC Blues \nTopic: In the clouds\, ready to shoot the approach\, some of your instruments start to fail! What would you do?\n\nYour instrument currency is about to expire. The solution? Rent a nice\, IFR equipped Cessna 172 and go shoot some approaches. It’s a day with some real IMC\, but not quite to minimums. What could possibly go wrong? In this month’s IMC Club meeting\, we will be discussing instrument failures\, what we can do when they happen (no\, you can’t just remove the post it notes that your CFII put over them back in training)\, and how we can recognize the symptoms before a problem becomes an emergency and really ruins our day. \n Speaker bio: Ken is an Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic with an IA\, he also holds a Private Pilot certificate with an Instrument rating and is working on his Commercial certificate. Ken is local to KPWK and is the Chief of Maintenance at AAR. As a professional in the corporate aviation industry he has obtained extensive experience in heavy and line maintenance operations\, project management\, aircraft management\, Part 145 repair station management\, team leadership\, and Part 135 aircraft operations. He also serves the local GA community if you’re lucky enough to get on his schedule. \n\n  \nIMC Club: The IMC Club’s purpose is to promote instrument flying\, proficiency\, and safety. SUMMARY:CEPA IMC Club - March 2021
DESCRIPTION:PWK IMC Club presents What Are Your Intentions? by Dave Klopfleisch\nIn the clouds\, ready to shoot the approach\, all your nav equipment fails!\n\n\nYou are taking your reliable workhorse\, a Mooney M20\, on a night cross country and you will be stopping for fuel in order to complete the trip. On the second leg\, you experience an equipment failure in IMC. Unable to shoot an RNAV or ILS you are left stranded in the clouds with ATC your only lifeline\, you need to make a decision… what is it going to be? \nDave Klopfleisch started flying in 1966 at Roselle Airport\, now called Schaumburg Airport in Schaumburg\, IL. He served in the Navy 1968-1974 with his last duty station at Miramar\, CA. In the Navy\, Dave flew the TA-4 single-engine attack jet. Afterward\, Dave worked for various corporate flight departments and served as the Safety Officer at the NAS Glenview Flying Club from 1993-1996. Flight Qualifications include CFI and MEI\, ATP\, Part 121 Flight Dispatcher\, current Safety Officer at Chicago Executive Flight School. \nDave also teaches an Upset recovery course in his aerobatic Beechcraft Sundowner\, helping pilots increase their skills and attain a better understanding of why stalls\, spins\, and spirals occur and how to safely recover from them. \nTo attend meeting\, go to https://join.freeconferencecall.com/pwkpilots\nOnline meeting ID: pwkpilots\nDial-in number (US): (720) 740-9630\nAccess code: 119900* \nSponsored by Chicago Executive Pilots Association (CEPA). \nIf you aren’t a member of CEPA and enjoy programs like this please consider joining CEPA; visit us at www.PWKpilots.org/membership/  Your dues help pay for these safety seminars.

SUMMARY:CEPA General Safety Seminar - February 2021
DESCRIPTION:Fatigue just means paying more attention\, right? I know how to stay alert.\n\nThe FAA defines fatigue as a general lack of alertness and degradation in mental and physical performance. Fatigue may cause a pilot to fall asleep during cruise flight when there are fewer tasks to perform or may impact alertness during take-off or landing. There are three types of fatigue: transient\, cumulative\, and circadian. It is estimated that 4-7% of civil aviation incidents and accidents can be attributed to fatigued pilots causing 250 fatalities in air carrier accidents in the last 16 years. \nAntidotes for fatigue begin with pilot education\, preparation\, proper rest and sleep\, diet\, and a fitness regime. Unfortunately\, there have been limited recommendations provided to pilots regarding diet\, fitness\, and mindful practices to reduce stress and help restfulness. The FAA has implemented numerous pilot duty hour restrictions and created resources that provide guidance on fatigue but more education is needed. \nDr. Warren Bruhl will discuss fatigue and how it affects pilots\, giving recommendations to improve restfulness\, diet\, and fitness. The pre-flight check of the plane begins with the pilot and how he/she is prepared to fly. Using a Fit-for-Flight mindset can help improve pilot skill and enjoyment while creating a safer environment in the sky. \n Warren Bruhl\, DC\, DICCP\, CFI\, CFII\, is a chiropractic physician\, author\, philanthropist\, and aviation educator. He has lectured around the world and appeared on television and radio teaching people the secrets to optimal health and fitness using natural health care practices. He is the director for Dreamweaver International\, an international 501(c)(3) charity\, that provides education\, healthcare\, and compassion care. He has traveled to Africa 14 times in the last seven years and is responsible for launching Little League Baseball in Kenya\, East Africa. He also has a desire to help young pilots develop in Kenya through his youth empowerment program. \nDr. Bruhl has an extensive interest in improving the lives of people he works with and now combines his passions as a healer and aviator to help pilots improve their skills and health. His extensive background as a chiropractic physician provides a unique point of view to help pilots enhance their focus\, fitness\, and skills. Dr. Bruhl’s “Fit for Flight” concepts are one of the key areas of aviation that are not discussed enough and may be a missing piece for some pilots to improve their skills\, aid their health\, and provide more enjoyment from flying. \n\nNOTE: There is an IMC Club meeting prior to this one. Each has a separate registration. Please join us for both but be sure to register for each one separately. \nFor FAASafety WINGS credits\, complete the online meeting attendance form; the meeting code will be provided at the end of each of the meetings.

SUMMARY:CEPA IMC Club - January 2021
DESCRIPTION:PWK IMC Club presents Invisible Assassins – Rick Durden on Carbon Monoxide Poisoning\n\nAs we embark on some winter flying\, we are probably going to be using the heaters in our aircraft more often. This poses a risk to us as pilots. A common way for Carbon Monoxide to enter the cockpit is through the airplanes cabin heating system. Being odorless and colorless\, Carbon Monoxide is almost impossible to detect without the use of specialized detectors\, and no\, not the little card often seen in rental and training aircraft. In fact\, we will be talking about why relying on one of those is just as dangerous as not having a quality detector at all. \nOn January 27th\, Rick Durden will discuss with us the dangers of Carbon Monoxide poisoning and what we as pilots can do to prevent it and its serious consequences. \nRick Durden was once described as aviation’s Renaissance Man. He is Airline Transport Pilot rated with experience in some 200 types of airplanes\, a practicing aviation attorney who has been involved in hundreds of aircraft accident cases\, writer\, aviation magazine editor\, FAASTeam safety counselor\, flight instructor\, volunteer pilot in remote areas of the U.S. and Central America\, and has been the executive director of a nonprofit conservation organization making use of aircraft and volunteer pilots throughout much of North America. \n  \n\nIMC Club: The IMC Club’s purpose is to promote instrument flying\, proficiency\, and safety.

SUMMARY:Flight Stimulator - ATC and Pilots Take a Flight in the Same Room
DESCRIPTION:Pilots and air traffic controllers have a unique relationship. Both sit behind displays with a lot of information\, but one is on the ground and the other likely hundreds of miles away and thousands of feet above creating quite a different perspective. \nLet’s get a couple of ATC tower and C90 TRACON controllers in the same room with a couple pilots and simulate a flight. Of course\, our pilots and controllers are going to make things “interesting” and we’ll see the other scramble to figure out WTF! \nWe welcome Ryan Schile and Andrew Rice\, Certified Professional Controllers (CPC) from O’Hare towers. Last year\, on March 1st\, the two of them saved a few hundred people from a very bad day\, separating an ERJ-145 from a B737-8 who got within 0.23 nm from each other. This won them the coveted President’s Award\, aka Archie Award\, at the Archie League Medal of Safety Awards banquet. We celebrate their getting it right\, and in the words of NATCA president\, Paul Rinaldi\, not getting it wrong. \nAnd\, we welcome Ryan Jaros\, a C90 TRACON controller\, to be our man in the middle. \nAnd\, like Rod Machado has shown us for many years now\, a bit of comedy can make a useful way to teach some valuable lessons. \nSo\, while these are decorated\, expert controllers\, our scenario will truly put them to the test of their skills. We’re going to conduct a flight between a couple local airports with a TRACON handoff in the middle. How many possible errors can some pilots and controllers make in one short flight like this? You’ll have to attend to find out. And\, no FAA Enforcement members will be present so we’ll see what virtual pilot or controller deviations happen! \nWarning: anybody using the term “fish finder” will result in vectors to hold over the North Pole with further clearance next week. \nNo\, the headline isn’t a typo\, this flight should be stimulating! \n \n  \nWelcome to the new COVID-19 world. Things have changed since the beginning of the year and we are adapting\, too. \nWe will offer a video conference stream for those who would rather. Details and registration will be provided shortly. \nFor those attending in person\, COVID protocols will be in place. Chairs will be properly distanced (socially-distancing groups\, e.g. couples\, partners\, etc.\, can move chairs together) and masks are required. We will cap the number of people at 50. Your cooperating is required if you wish to attend in person. Prior to attending a safety seminar please review and abide by current CDC\, state and\, local health guidelines.

Mixing in with the turbine traffic isn’t easy for pilots or controllers. Let’s figure out this pilot’s difficult approach and decision. With our two tower controllers and a TRACON (and former MIA tower) controller\, this should be a fascinating discussion! \nIMC Club: The IMC Club’s purpose is to promote instrument flying\, proficiency\, and safety. SUMMARY:CEPA & Waukegan IMC Club Joint Chapter Meeting - July 2020
DESCRIPTION:  \nA mid-summer trip between Chicago and Kansas City\, what could go wrong? The weather at the destination was the main consideration when the go/no go decision was made. Things became very interesting very fast when lower clouds were experienced before getting out of Chicago. Having the XM weather in-op was to be a minor inconvenience but wasn’t so minor when the onboard iPad with ADS‑B weather overheated and shut down. \nTime permitting\, we’ll look at a second scenario\, a quick breakfast flight to KBMI and back. There was a significant WX shift resulting in an uncomfortable encounter with ice on the return trip to KPWK. The pictures will make you shudder. \nIMC Club: The IMC Club’s purpose is to promote instrument flying\, proficiency\, and safety. The intent is to create a community of pilots willing to share their perspective\, provide recognition\, foster communications\, promote safety\, and build proficiency in instrument flying. SUMMARY:*Postponed* IMC Club - April 2020 - Jason Schappert
DESCRIPTION:Due to the coronavirus COVID-19 and the lock-down status\, we must reschedule this meeting. Please check back from time-to-time for the rescheduled date.\n  \nCEPA welcomes back Jason Schappert. Jason makes his annual trip up north to Chicago\, risking possible cold weather. Jason brings with a new and interesting scenario\, we’ll all be solving this sticky situation. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nWhat would you do? \n \n  \nIMC Club: The IMC Club’s purpose is to promote instrument flying\, proficiency\, and safety. \n \nSponsored by Chicago Executive Pilots Association (CEPA). \nIf you aren’t a member of CEPA\, please consider joining CEPA if you aren’t a member and like programs like this\, please visit us at www.PWKpilots.org/membership/  Your dues help pay for these safety seminars.
