SUMMARY:Becoming an "Appropriately" Confident Pilot - Marc Epner - Safety Meeting - August 2024
DESCRIPTION:Pilots and their passengers want the PIC to be many things\, all contributing to a safe and enjoyable experience\, attributes that culminate in a confident pilot. However\, confidence can come from multiple sources\, some of which give a false sense of confidence. Join the discussion on being an appropriately confident pilot. \nSpeaker Bio: \nMarc Epner started his love affair with aviation when as a young boy. After earning his private pilot license in 1976\, he lost his medical in 1979.  He didn’t step back into a GA airplane for 25 years.  A chance flight in 2004 reminded him how much he loved flying and started him down a path of taking his skills to the next level. Today\, Marc has accumulated almost 2700 hours\, earned multiple ratings\, purchased a Cirrus SR22\, and co-founded Leading Edge Flying Club at Chicago Executive Airport. Marc shares his love of aviation with others via presentations\, discussions\, and his YouTube channel\, “PF Flying”

DESCRIPTION:Chicago’s Role in the Structure of the Airline Industry\nSpeaker: Mike Haupt \nToday\, Chicago is best known for being a hub through which countless passengers endure excruciating plane changes as well as O’Hare’s ability to completely disrupt nationwide air service. This program uncovers the critical role Chicago played in forming the airline industry not just for the United States but worldwide. Discover how rudimentary air mail carriers developed and morphed into the airlines we know today. See how Chicago became the center of the air mail system both for connecting routes and for technologies crucial to safe\, long-distance\, regular flights across our vast nation. Learn the role Chicago played in creating the safety-first regulatory environment that provided the general public with confidence in flying. Witness Chicago’s pivotal role in airline labor relations which has remained a significant factor in airline operations into the present. See how Chicago’s influence expanded beyond national borders to establish standards worldwide. \nMichael Haupt\, has spent decades exploring the extent of aviation activity in and around Chicago\, especially in the early part of the 20th Century. SUMMARY:Learn the difference between practicing for an engine failure and really experiencing one
DESCRIPTION:Ask any pilot what scares them most\, and a catastrophic engine failure is probably near the top of the list. In April 2022\, Marc Epner was flying his Cirrus SR-22 to Akron\, Ohio from PWK at about 1\,500 AGL. About halfway there\, he quizzed himself about what he’d do if the engine quit. Little did he know that 30 minutes later he’d be tasked with handling that exact emergency … for real. \nSpoiler alert: no one was hurt. Marc says he was surprised by his reaction and is excited to share what he learned from the incident with other pilots. It’s a night you won’t want to miss. \nSpeaker Bio: \nMarc Epner is a Chicago-based pilot\, who started his love affair with aviation when he was a young boy growing up in the southern suburbs of Chicago.  After earning his private pilot license in 1976\, Marc lost his medical in 1979 and didn’t set foot in a general aviation airplane until 2004\, a full 25 years later.  That flight rekindled his passion for aviation and has since accumulated over 2300 hours\, earned multiple ratings\, purchased a Cirrus SR22\, co-founded Leading Edge Flying Club at Chicago Executive airport\, is co-host of the SimpleFlight Radio podcast and active with his “Passion for Flying” YouTube Channel.  Marc loves to talk aviation and has been asked to speak to a variety of audiences in venues like Oshkosh AirVenture\, Sun-N-Fun\, Community Fly-Ins\, and others. \nEligible for FAASafety WINGS credit.

SUMMARY:CEPA Combined IMC Club and Safety Meeting - August 2021
DESCRIPTION:PWK IMC Club and CEPA Safety Meeting – Unable – Michael Baraz\nTopic: You descend out of the clouds and cancel IFR\, ATC gives you unsafe instructions! What would you do?\n\nYou have just canceled IFR to get better routing for your compassion flight\, when ATC gives you an instruction that puts you out over Lake Michigan at 2000′ MSL. To make matters worse\, you comply in your single engine piston airplane.\nIn this month’s IMC Club meeting\, we will be discussing PIC decision making and situational awareness.\n  \nSpeaker bio: Michael Baraz is an accomplished pilot holding an Airline Transport Pilot rating\, Advanced Ground Instructor rating and he is soon to be a CFI\, Michael also founded a STEM Aviation program at Lindbloom Math and Science Academy. He flies Angel flights and Pilots ‘n’ Paws missions regularly in his own Mooney M20k. As most of you already know\, Michael is also the President of the Chicago Executive Pilots Association.\n\n  \n  \n\nSAFETY MEETING: PUBLIC BENEFIT FLYING – PLANNING A SAFE MISSION\nInvited speaker from Lifeline Pilots \n\nIMC Club: The IMC Club’s purpose is to promote instrument flying\, proficiency\, and safety. The intent is to create a community of pilots willing to share their perspective\, provide recognition\, foster communications\, promote safety\, and build proficiency in instrument flying. An IFR rating is not needed to participate in this excellent forum where we think through the various options from the comfort of your chair\, firmly on the ground… before it is you sitting in the cockpit. \nWe meet monthly when pilots (and would-be pilots) network and share knowledge and experiences to keep our heads in the game. \nFor FAASafety WINGS credits\, complete the online meeting attendance form; the meeting code will be provided at the end of each of the meetings. \nTo attend the online meeting\, go to https://join.freeconferencecall.com/pwkpilots\nOnline meeting ID: pwkpilots\nDial-in number (US): (720) 740-9630\nAccess code: 119900* \nSponsored by Chicago Executive Pilots Association (CEPA). \nIf you aren’t a member of CEPA and enjoy programs like this please consider joining CEPA; visit us at www.PWKpilots.org/membership/  Your dues help pay for these safety seminars.

SUMMARY:CEPA Combined IMC Club and Safety Meeting - June 2021
DESCRIPTION:PWK IMC Club and CEPA Safety Meeting – NTSB Case Study – Ed Malinowski\nTopic: ‘My engine was well maintained but it had a power loss accident?’ – The evolution of a Critical Service Bulletin\n\nThis June we are changing up the format of our usual IMC Club and Safety meeting. Instead\, we are encouraging all pilots to attend right from the start as we are extremely fortunate to have Ed Malinowski\, a former NTSB accident investigator\, present the findings of an accident in which a well-maintained Cirrus suffered a loss of power\, resulting in the deployment of the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS) and saved the life of the pilot. Ed will walk us through how the NTSB conducts its investigations\, some ideas for us on operating the airplanes we own or rent. He will also be discussing Service Difficulty Reports (SDRs) and how the findings of this unfortunate accident led to a Critical Service Bulletin (CSB). In addition\, Ed will walk us through an FAA presentation on how to access the SDR database via the FAA’s website. \nThe flight in which the accident occurred was under IFR; however\, we believe the information in this presentation will be relevant to all pilots\, renters and owners alike.\n \nSpeaker bio: Since 1999\, Ed has investigated the facts\, circumstances\, and conditions associated with aviation accidents and has produced factual reports regarding them. He has 31+ years of US Air Force reserve service (Lt. Col. with Logistics Commander\, Squadron Commander\, Aircraft Maintenance\, and Readiness specialties) which includes Key Positions as an aircraft maintenance analyst for senior AF leadership in the Crisis Action Team in the Pentagon\, Deputy Commander of an Enroute Group\, Deputy Commander of the largest combat deployed maintenance Wing\, and Officer In Charge of the AF Division during the 56th Inaugural Parade. His experience as an airline transport pilot with air taxi/carrier operations along with experience as the airport manager of an airport certified under FAR 139 (Meigs Field) has also rounded out his background.  \n\nIMC Club: The IMC Club’s purpose is to promote instrument flying\, proficiency\, and safety.

SUMMARY:CEPA General Safety Seminar - February 2021
DESCRIPTION:Fatigue just means paying more attention\, right? I know how to stay alert.\n\nThe FAA defines fatigue as a general lack of alertness and degradation in mental and physical performance. Fatigue may cause a pilot to fall asleep during cruise flight when there are fewer tasks to perform or may impact alertness during take-off or landing. There are three types of fatigue: transient\, cumulative\, and circadian. It is estimated that 4-7% of civil aviation incidents and accidents can be attributed to fatigued pilots causing 250 fatalities in air carrier accidents in the last 16 years. \nAntidotes for fatigue begin with pilot education\, preparation\, proper rest and sleep\, diet\, and a fitness regime. Unfortunately\, there have been limited recommendations provided to pilots regarding diet\, fitness\, and mindful practices to reduce stress and help restfulness. The FAA has implemented numerous pilot duty hour restrictions and created resources that provide guidance on fatigue but more education is needed. \nDr. Warren Bruhl will discuss fatigue and how it affects pilots\, giving recommendations to improve restfulness\, diet\, and fitness. The pre-flight check of the plane begins with the pilot and how he/she is prepared to fly. Using a Fit-for-Flight mindset can help improve pilot skill and enjoyment while creating a safer environment in the sky. \n Warren Bruhl\, DC\, DICCP\, CFI\, CFII\, is a chiropractic physician\, author\, philanthropist\, and aviation educator. He has lectured around the world and appeared on television and radio teaching people the secrets to optimal health and fitness using natural health care practices. He is the director for Dreamweaver International\, an international 501(c)(3) charity\, that provides education\, healthcare\, and compassion care. He has traveled to Africa 14 times in the last seven years and is responsible for launching Little League Baseball in Kenya\, East Africa. He also has a desire to help young pilots develop in Kenya through his youth empowerment program. \nDr. Bruhl has an extensive interest in improving the lives of people he works with and now combines his passions as a healer and aviator to help pilots improve their skills and health. His extensive background as a chiropractic physician provides a unique point of view to help pilots enhance their focus\, fitness\, and skills. Dr. Bruhl’s “Fit for Flight” concepts are one of the key areas of aviation that are not discussed enough and may be a missing piece for some pilots to improve their skills\, aid their health\, and provide more enjoyment from flying. \n\nNOTE: There is an IMC Club meeting prior to this one. Each has a separate registration. Please join us for both but be sure to register for each one separately. \nFor FAASafety WINGS credits\, complete the online meeting attendance form; the meeting code will be provided at the end of each of the meetings. \nTo attend meeting\, go to https://join.freeconferencecall.com/pwkpilots\nOnline meeting ID: pwkpilots\nDial-in number (US): (720) 740-9630\nAccess code: 119900* \nSponsored by Chicago Executive Pilots Association (CEPA). \nIf you aren’t a member of CEPA and enjoy programs like this please consider joining CEPA; visit us at www.PWKpilots.org/membership/  Your dues help pay for these safety seminars.

SUMMARY:Flight Stimulator - ATC and Pilots Take a Flight in the Same Room
DESCRIPTION:Pilots and air traffic controllers have a unique relationship. Both sit behind displays with a lot of information\, but one is on the ground and the other likely hundreds of miles away and thousands of feet above creating quite a different perspective. \nLet’s get a couple of ATC tower and C90 TRACON controllers in the same room with a couple pilots and simulate a flight. Of course\, our pilots and controllers are going to make things “interesting” and we’ll see the other scramble to figure out WTF! \nWe welcome Ryan Schile and Andrew Rice\, Certified Professional Controllers (CPC) from O’Hare towers. Last year\, on March 1st\, the two of them saved a few hundred people from a very bad day\, separating an ERJ-145 from a B737-8 who got within 0.23 nm from each other. This won them the coveted President’s Award\, aka Archie Award\, at the Archie League Medal of Safety Awards banquet. We celebrate their getting it right\, and in the words of NATCA president\, Paul Rinaldi\, not getting it wrong. \nAnd\, we welcome Ryan Jaros\, a C90 TRACON controller\, to be our man in the middle. \nAnd\, like Rod Machado has shown us for many years now\, a bit of comedy can make a useful way to teach some valuable lessons. \nSo\, while these are decorated\, expert controllers\, our scenario will truly put them to the test of their skills. We’re going to conduct a flight between a couple local airports with a TRACON handoff in the middle. How many possible errors can some pilots and controllers make in one short flight like this? You’ll have to attend to find out. And\, no FAA Enforcement members will be present so we’ll see what virtual pilot or controller deviations happen! \nWarning: anybody using the term “fish finder” will result in vectors to hold over the North Pole with further clearance next week. \nNo\, the headline isn’t a typo\, this flight should be stimulating! \n \n  \nWelcome to the new COVID-19 world. Things have changed since the beginning of the year and we are adapting\, too. \nWe will offer a video conference stream for those who would rather. Details and registration will be provided shortly. \nFor those attending in person\, COVID protocols will be in place. Chairs will be properly distanced (socially-distancing groups\, e.g. couples\, partners\, etc.\, can move chairs together) and masks are required. We will cap the number of people at 50. Your cooperating is required if you wish to attend in person. Prior to attending a safety seminar please review and abide by current CDC\, state and\, local health guidelines.

SUMMARY:Safety Meeting at PWK - Get your HEMS tool up - Rex Alexander
DESCRIPTION:HEMS stands for Helicopter Emergency Medical Services. But you don’t need to be flying a helicopter\, nor doing emergency medical services to make good use of it. \nWhat makes the HEMS tool such a valuable supplement to a weather briefing is that it fills a niche in the lineup of aviation weather information sources. The tool isn’t a surface observation report (like a METAR) or a terminal forecast but is a resource that helps you figure out what the weather may be in the low levels and at the surface between two reporting points. \nUsing the HEMS tool during your flight planning will make you a safer\, more weather-savvy pilot\, because the tool was designed to increase pilots’ situational awareness down low\, thus reducing loss-of-control accidents (LOC) and controlled flight into terrain (CFIT). \nSpeaker bio:\nRex Alexander is president of Five-Alpha (5α) LLC\, a global consultancy dedicated to providing specialized education\, training\, insight\, and services in the very challenging and unique communities of Helicopter and Vertical Lift Infrastructure and Organ/Tissue Donation & Transplantation. \n \nSponsored by Chicago Executive Pilots Association (CEPA). \nThis meeting is part of the bi-monthly Chicago Executive Pilots’ Association proficiency and safety seminar series\, this event is to promote safety and build proficiency flying. Students and airline captains alike are invited to participate in this excellent forum where we think through the various options from the comfort of your chair\, firmly on the ground… before it is you sitting in the cockpit. \nIf you aren’t a member of CEPA\, please consider joining CEPA if you aren’t a member and like programs like this\, please visit us at www.PWKpilots.org/membership/  Your dues help pay for these safety seminars. \nNOTE: There is an IMC Club meeting prior to this one. Each has a separate registration. Please join us for both but be sure to register for both separately. Also\, register here for the IMC Club meeting.

SUMMARY:Night Flying Safety - What Your CFI Didn't Teach You - Max Trescott
DESCRIPTION:Flying at night can be fun\, but pilots should know the pitfalls and plan accordingly. The risks at night are different and higher\, but they can be quantified and mitigated by cautious pilots who are well versed in night flying safety techniques. \nLearn ways to fly safely at night and avoid some of the pitfalls that continue to claim even experienced pilots in avoidable night flying accidents. \nJoin us for our semi-monthly safety seminar. The objective: fly safer by being a prepared pilot. \nSpeaker bio: Max Trescott is the 2008 National CFI of the Year. He’s heard around the world talking about general aviation each week on his Aviation News Talk podcast. \n \nSponsored by Chicago Executive Pilots Association (CEPA). SUMMARY:IMC Club - Above the Clouds with a Dark PFD moderated by Max Trescott
DESCRIPTION:It is an early evening\, easy flight from Cleveland Lorraine County Regional (KLPR) to Nashville (KBNA). Not! This is an IMC Club meeting\, nothing happens without some kind of a problem and the opportunity for us to have a discussion about what circumstances our unfortunate pilot friend faces. What unfortunate problem? His PFD goes dark shortly after takeoff; ceilings are not good\, better weather ahead but how far? Yikes! So\, we’ll figure out our best answer to the infamous IMC Club question\, “what would you do?” \nSpeaker bio: Max Trescott is the 2008 National CFI of the Year. He’s heard around the world talking about general aviation each week on his Aviation News Talk podcast. \n  \nIMC Club: The IMC Club’s purpose is to promote instrument flying\, proficiency\, and safety. \nWe meet monthly when pilots (and would-be pilots) network and share knowledge and experiences to keep our head in the game.  \n \nNOTE: There is a Safety Meeting following this one. Each has a separate registration. Please join us for both but be sure to register for both separately. Register here for the CEPA Safety Meeting.
