His past as a KC-135 Boom Operator and a Chicago PD Lieutenant should make it an especially interesting evening. \nSpeaker Bio: Joe Long (Commander\, Palwaukee Composite Squadron\, IL Wing CAP Standardization and Evaluation Officer). Joe has 2000 flight hours. He has CFI\, CFII\, and MEI instructor certificates.  Joe has been flying for over 30 years. He spent time as a KC-135 Boom Operator in the Air Force and ANG. In 2017\, he won the NAS First\, People Always Firefighter Award for his work in air traffic control simulation. \nBefore joining the FAA\, Lasky served in the U.S. Marine Corps as an Air Traffic Control Tower Supervisor at MCAS Beaufort\, South Carolina\, and deployed with Marine Air Traffic Control Mobile Team One (MMT-1) during Operation Enduring Freedom. \nHe values leadership and training as the keys to building strong teams. DESCRIPTION:Ask any pilot what scares them most\, and a catastrophic engine failure is probably near the top of the list. In April 2022\, Marc Epner was flying his Cirrus SR-22 to Akron\, Ohio from PWK at about 1\,500 AGL. About halfway there\, he quizzed himself about what he’d do if the engine quit. Little did he know that 30 minutes later he’d be tasked with handling that exact emergency … for real. \nSpoiler alert: no one was hurt. Marc says he was surprised by his reaction and is excited to share what he learned from the incident with other pilots. It’s a night you won’t want to miss. \nSpeaker Bio: \nMarc Epner is a Chicago-based pilot\, who started his love affair with aviation when he was a young boy growing up in the southern suburbs of Chicago.  After earning his private pilot license in 1976\, Marc lost his medical in 1979 and didn’t set foot in a general aviation airplane until 2004\, a full 25 years later.  That flight rekindled his passion for aviation and has since accumulated over 2300 hours\, earned multiple ratings\, purchased a Cirrus SR22\, co-founded Leading Edge Flying Club at Chicago Executive airport\, is co-host of the SimpleFlight Radio podcast and active with his “Passion for Flying” YouTube Channel.  Marc loves to talk aviation and has been asked to speak to a variety of audiences in venues like Oshkosh AirVenture\, Sun-N-Fun\, Community Fly-Ins\, and others. \nEligible for FAASafety WINGS credit.

DESCRIPTION:PWK IMC Club and CEPA Safety Meeting – NTSB Case Study – Ed Malinowski\nTopic: ‘My engine was well maintained but it had a power loss accident?’ – The evolution of a Critical Service Bulletin\n\nThis June we are changing up the format of our usual IMC Club and Safety meeting. Instead\, we are encouraging all pilots to attend right from the start as we are extremely fortunate to have Ed Malinowski\, a former NTSB accident investigator\, present the findings of an accident in which a well-maintained Cirrus suffered a loss of power\, resulting in the deployment of the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS) and saved the life of the pilot. Ed will walk us through how the NTSB conducts its investigations\, some ideas for us on operating the airplanes we own or rent. He will also be discussing Service Difficulty Reports (SDRs) and how the findings of this unfortunate accident led to a Critical Service Bulletin (CSB). In addition\, Ed will walk us through an FAA presentation on how to access the SDR database via the FAA’s website. \nThe flight in which the accident occurred was under IFR; however\, we believe the information in this presentation will be relevant to all pilots\, renters and owners alike.\n \nSpeaker bio: Since 1999\, Ed has investigated the facts\, circumstances\, and conditions associated with aviation accidents and has produced factual reports regarding them. He has 31+ years of US Air Force reserve service (Lt. Col. with Logistics Commander\, Squadron Commander\, Aircraft Maintenance\, and Readiness specialties) which includes Key Positions as an aircraft maintenance analyst for senior AF leadership in the Crisis Action Team in the Pentagon\, Deputy Commander of an Enroute Group\, Deputy Commander of the largest combat deployed maintenance Wing\, and Officer In Charge of the AF Division during the 56th Inaugural Parade. DESCRIPTION:Fatigue just means paying more attention\, right? I know how to stay alert.\n\nThe FAA defines fatigue as a general lack of alertness and degradation in mental and physical performance. Fatigue may cause a pilot to fall asleep during cruise flight when there are fewer tasks to perform or may impact alertness during take-off or landing. There are three types of fatigue: transient\, cumulative\, and circadian. It is estimated that 4-7% of civil aviation incidents and accidents can be attributed to fatigued pilots causing 250 fatalities in air carrier accidents in the last 16 years. \nAntidotes for fatigue begin with pilot education\, preparation\, proper rest and sleep\, diet\, and a fitness regime. Unfortunately\, there have been limited recommendations provided to pilots regarding diet\, fitness\, and mindful practices to reduce stress and help restfulness. The FAA has implemented numerous pilot duty hour restrictions and created resources that provide guidance on fatigue but more education is needed. \nDr. Warren Bruhl will discuss fatigue and how it affects pilots\, giving recommendations to improve restfulness\, diet\, and fitness. The pre-flight check of the plane begins with the pilot and how he/she is prepared to fly. Using a Fit-for-Flight mindset can help improve pilot skill and enjoyment while creating a safer environment in the sky. \n Warren Bruhl\, DC\, DICCP\, CFI\, CFII\, is a chiropractic physician\, author\, philanthropist\, and aviation educator. He has lectured around the world and appeared on television and radio teaching people the secrets to optimal health and fitness using natural health care practices. He is the director for Dreamweaver International\, an international 501(c)(3) charity\, that provides education\, healthcare\, and compassion care. He has traveled to Africa 14 times in the last seven years and is responsible for launching Little League Baseball in Kenya\, East Africa. He also has a desire to help young pilots develop in Kenya through his youth empowerment program. \nDr. Bruhl has an extensive interest in improving the lives of people he works with and now combines his passions as a healer and aviator to help pilots improve their skills and health. DESCRIPTION:All Chicagoland Flying Clubs\, Pilot Associations\, Flight Schools\, Airport Support Network Members\n \nYou are invited to represent your organization at a Town Hall Advocacy meeting hosted by the Chicago Executive Pilot Association (CEPA) and presented by Kyle Lewis (AOPA Government Affairs) and Andy Miller (AOPA You Can Fly). This Town Hall is designed to inform local pilot groups\, flying clubs\, airport associations\, and AOPA Airport Support Network Volunteers on the current national and local issues AOPA is working on a day to day basis. Airport advocacy\, regional legislative agendas\, and the growth of the pilot population will be discussed\, and there will be an opportunity for Q&A. \nPlease RSVP\, click here. \nThe Town Hall Advocacy meeting will start at 5:30. You can fly over to KPWK. Signature Flight Support has generously offered to waive ramp fees for this fly-in event; the hotel venue is 0.8sm walk but Signature will shuttle you over if you’d rather. \nIf you can’t make this meeting\, please send someone else to represent your organization. SUMMARY:Flight Stimulator - ATC and Pilots Take a Flight in the Same Room
DESCRIPTION:Pilots and air traffic controllers have a unique relationship. Both sit behind displays with a lot of information\, but one is on the ground and the other likely hundreds of miles away and thousands of feet above creating quite a different perspective. \nLet’s get a couple of ATC tower and C90 TRACON controllers in the same room with a couple pilots and simulate a flight. Of course\, our pilots and controllers are going to make things “interesting” and we’ll see the other scramble to figure out WTF! \nWe welcome Ryan Schile and Andrew Rice\, Certified Professional Controllers (CPC) from O’Hare towers. Last year\, on March 1st\, the two of them saved a few hundred people from a very bad day\, separating an ERJ-145 from a B737-8 who got within 0.23 nm from each other. This won them the coveted President’s Award\, aka Archie Award\, at the Archie League Medal of Safety Awards banquet. We celebrate their getting it right\, and in the words of NATCA president\, Paul Rinaldi\, not getting it wrong. \nAnd\, we welcome Ryan Jaros\, a C90 TRACON controller\, to be our man in the middle. \nAnd\, like Rod Machado has shown us for many years now\, a bit of comedy can make a useful way to teach some valuable lessons. \nSo\, while these are decorated\, expert controllers\, our scenario will truly put them to the test of their skills. We’re going to conduct a flight between a couple local airports with a TRACON handoff in the middle. How many possible errors can some pilots and controllers make in one short flight like this? You’ll have to attend to find out. And\, no FAA Enforcement members will be present so we’ll see what virtual pilot or controller deviations happen! \nWarning: anybody using the term “fish finder” will result in vectors to hold over the North Pole with further clearance next week. \nNo\, the headline isn’t a typo\, this flight should be stimulating! \n  \n  \nWelcome to the new COVID-19 world. Things have changed since the beginning of the year and we are adapting\, too. \nWe will offer a video conference stream for those who would rather. Details and registration will be provided shortly. \nFor those attending in person\, COVID protocols will be in place. Chairs will be properly distanced (socially-distancing groups\, e.g. couples\, partners\, etc.\, can move chairs together) and masks are required. We will cap the number of people at 50.
