Young Eagles Changes Location
August 15, 2008
Pam’s role in Young Eagles has been critical in the success of the program over the years. She took upon herself the responsibility to keep the Young Eagles hotline current with the appropriate message, to return calls of the parents, send out registration forms that they requested, contact news media, schedule the kids, and arrange the facility and hangar the day of the rally.
Now Pam has moved to Signature Flight Support on the east side of the field. With her long-standing committment to the Young Eagles program, she has teamed up with Signature Operations Manager Al Palicki to keep Young Eagles going there for the summer rally.
So theYoung Eagles program will continue as scheduled but in a different location. Signature Flight Support is at 1100 South Milwaukee Avenue, Wheeling. All times and procedures that you are familiar with will be the same as before: volunteers please arrive at 08:30, pilots at 9:00, pilot briefing in the main conference room at 09:30, and flights begin at 10:00.
Many thanks for the help and support generously given by David Kaufman and his staff at Atlantic Aviation. Their tireless contribution has greatly helped make the Young Eagles program the success it is.

Chicago Executive Airport Young Eagles Program Overview
The Young Eagles program was established in 1992 by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) of Oshkosh Wisconsin. The program was designed to give children ages 7-17 their first airplane ride free of charge. With the help of local chapters and associate organizations, EAA’s initial goal of flying one million kids by the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers first flight in 1903 was more than reached. As of the December 2003 anniversary, over 1,025,000 children had been flown worldwide — more than 700 of them at Chicago Executive. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary, the EAA announced the indefinite extension of the program with the new goal of flying 1,000 children each month. As of January 2008, the total number of Young Eagles flown increased to more than 1,400,000.
At Chicago Executive Airport in suburban Wheeling, Young Eagles rallies are conducted by volunteer FAA certified pilots flying their own aircraft and entirely at their own expense. Aircraft range from two seat trainers, to larger twin-engine aircraft. Young Eagles introductory flights last 15 to 20 minutes depending on type of aircraft. Pilots strive to give their Young Eagles participants a flight experience they will remember for the rest of their lives. During their flights children see how aircraft operations are conducted and develop an understanding of how pilots work with the Air Traffic Control (ATC) to ensure a safe and enjoyable flight.
On the ground, the Young Eagles flight experience is supplemented by a group of dedicated volunteers who conduct aeronautical ground school lessons including everything from aviation chart reading, aerodynamics and radio communications, to understanding weather and theory of flight. At the end of their flights, children are presented with a commemorative certificate signed by their pilot and national program chairman Harrison Ford, and each child’s name is entered in “the world’s largest logbook” at EAA museum headquarters.
The Young Eagles program at Chicago Executive Airport is conducted at Signature Flight Support’s corporate terminal, 1100 South Milwaukee Avenue, Wheeling. Rallies are held quarterly with make-up days 1 week after the rally date or as announced. Flights start at 10:00AM and generally run until 2:00PM.
To sign-up individual children or a group, call the Young Eagles Hotline at 847-883-8388 and follow the menu. Children must be between the ages of 7 and 17 and need parent’s or guardian’s written permission for the flight–forms will be mailed to those who pre-register and are available the day of the rally for walk-ups. Designated responsible adults must be present for each child at the event. After 7:30AM on the day of the rally, call the Young Eagles hotline for the rally status.

Members Picnic Coming Up!
July 10, 2008
The PAPA ACE Annual Member Picnic will be held on Wednesday, Aug 27th, at 6:30 p.m.
As you all know, Hangar One is being demolished, so Jim Kwasek is unable to host the PAPA picnic as he has so generously done in the past. However, Jim McLennan, has volunteered his hangar for our picnic this year! Jim’s hangar is Hangar 13, behind the motel and the 1098 building.
Please set aside this date and join us for an evening of socializing, good food and
scholarship awards presentations. PAPA Picnic Committee members include Bob Hanaford and Mike Ballenger, who are arranging the food. Dennis Rouleau has offered us, on behalf of the airport, the free use of some of the tables and chairs we will need and tubs for icing down the drinks.
2008 PAPA ACE Picnic – NEW LOCATION!
As always, current PAPA members attend free, and there will be a nominal charge for guests. More information will be in the August Newsletter and sent to PAPA members via email.
Have you renewed yet?
June 13, 2008
May was membership month for PAPA At Chicago Executive. Many of you promptly returned your membership forms with a check, and for that we are grateful. You have joined in supporting the oldest pilot organization at Chicago Executive Airport. Our work representing you and the other users of PWK will continue. If you haven’t yet renewed, please send in your check and your renewal form TODAY!
It is especially interesting to note that in the past 14 years operations at PWK have declined radically, and yet our membership numbers have stayed virtually the same. Looking at the chart below, you can see that while aircraft movements went from a high of approximately 200,000 to a current low of about 100,000 per year. During the same time period, PAPA membership numbers have remained relatively consistent.

As new members are the life blood of any organization, we, of course, would like to increase our numbers. We welcome any new members who wish to join in. But we find it particularly interesting when student starts are down, aircraft sales are depressed, and operations at the airport are half what they were 14 years ago - that we remain strong. Thanks to all of our renewing members who make our educational, representation and social efforts worthwhile.
A New ATP Certificated Pilot Amongst Us!
May 24, 2008
PAPA At Chicago Executive would like to congratulate Howard Levinson on achieving an aviation milestone.
On May 24th he not only mastered the Garmin 1000 glass cockpit and Diamond Twinstar, but also at the young age of 84 successfully passed his ATP check ride.
Howard personifies the saying “A good pilot is always learning” as he has continued his pursuit of excellence in aviation from B24s in WWII through this morning’s accomplishment.
Designated Examiner Al Engelhardt signed Howard off on this, the next step in his flying career. We wish him well and await the next chapter in his wonderful story.
